Counterstamps
J. YOUS. (curved) on an 1849 Braided Hair large cent. Brunk Y-67, Rulau-Pa 703. Host coin Extra Fine.
Joshua Yous (1826-1904) was a gunsmith making percussion fullstock and patch box rifles in Greencastle, PA from 1854 to 1861, later working as a machinist. He used several different stamps to mark his guns, including a curved type as here, or with his name in a straight line. This date is not included by Brunk as those reported. One of the nicest examples encountered.
