Nickel Three-Cent Piece
1877 Nickel Three-Cent Piece. Proof-65 Cameo (PCGS).
A lovely Gem specimen, both sides possess pleasing cameo contrast between frosty devices and reflective fields. Dusted with the lightest silver iridescence, an enhancing blush of reddish-gold is also evident at the upper reverse border. One of just three Proof-only nickel three-cent issues, the 1877 has long enjoyed key date status. While most references provide an estimated mintage of 900 pieces, the actual number struck is likely on the order of 1,250 to 1,500 coins. Regardless, the 1877 has the lowest mintage for any date in the nickel three-cent series, and examples are popular with collectors at all levels of preservation.
