Walking Liberty Half Dollar
Vividly Toned Superb Gem 1945-D Half Dollar
Tied for Finest Certified
1945-D Walking Liberty Half Dollar. MS-68 (PCGS).
This incredibly beautiful Ultra Gem is ringed in very intense, vivid, multicolored peripheral toning. The centers are brilliant apart from the lightest champagne-pink tinting, and the luster is full and softly frosted throughout. Both sides are virtually flawless even under close scrutiny with a loupe, and it is little wonder that this coin is tied for finest certified for the issue at PCGS with just one other example. Interestingly for an issue with a relatively limited mintage of 9.9 million pieces, the 1945-D is one of the more frequently encountered Walking Liberty half dollar "short set" issues in Mint State. Hundreds of thousands of such coins are extant, and certified examples are quite available in grades up to and including MS-66. Any finer, however, and the conditionally rare nature of the 1945-D comes to the fore. At MS-68, in fact, this issue is virtually non-collectible, as the present example is tied with just one other at the apex of the PCGS Population Report. Neither of the PCGS MS-68 coins has been sold at auction in the past, making this offering a rare opportunity for the most advanced collectors. Surely destined for another top-flight Walking Liberty collection on the PCGS Set Registry.
