Description

1942 Experimental Cent. Judd-2062, Pollock-Unlisted, RB 42-56a Fourth Reverse. Rarity-7-. Compression Molded Phenolic Resin Impregnated Paper Filler, Red. Plain Edge. Specimen. Unc Details--Environmental Damage (PCGS).

19.0 mm, 1.7 mm thick. 7.6 grains. Obv: Bust of Columbia faces right, the portrait borrowed from the Columbian 2 centavo coin. The periphery is inscribed LIBERTY / JUSTICE with the date 1942 below. Rev: A simple wreath surrounds the inscription UNITED / STATES / MINT, the wreath copied from the Baker-155 Washington medalet. The reverse is rotated more than 90 degrees counterclockwise from coin alignment. Deep mahogany-brown and reddish-rose colors to both sides, the texture granular, as made. A product of Colt's Patent Firearms Manufacturing Co., and struck from a newly identified fourth reverse die that is not included in the 2012 edition of Roger W. Burdette's United States Pattern & Experimental Pieces of WW-II. The RB 42-56a attribution will be included in the next edition of the author's work but, in the meantime, this piece is incorrectly attributed on the PCGS insert as RB 42-56. The key identifier of the Fourth Reverse is the T in MINT higher than the other letters.

From the Bob Heisley Collection.
