Description

Undated (possibly 1860s) Marksmanship Medal. cf. Julian MK-22. White Metal. Extremely Fine, Environmental Damage.

35 mm. Obv: Kneeling rifleman in what appears to be a Civil War era uniform. There is no lettering on the obverse, but there is an area around the image where an inscription could be added. Rev: Backpack over crossed rifles and flags. Once again, there is no inscription. The details are sharp, and in some protected areas slight remnants of the original silvery finish remain, however most of the surface has been affected by tin pest and is now a dark gray with microscopic pitting, a condition quite common on medals in this composition from this period. Of interest is that the obverse design is quite reminiscent of the later U.S. Mint Marksmanship medals, particularly Julian MK-22.
