PELOPONNESOS. Elis. Olympia. AR Stater (11.94 gms), "Zeus" Mint, ca. 460-452 B.C (80th-82nd Olympiad). NGC Ch EF, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 2/5. Countermarks, Edge Marks.
HGC-5, 292; BCD Olympia-19; Seltman-Unlisted dies. Obverse: Eagle flying left, tearing apart hare clutched in talons; Reverse: Winged thunderbolt with volutes; F-A across field; all within incuse circle. This very attractive example is struck to a high standard and bears very little evidence of circulation. Some countermarks are present, which is a somewhat common occurrence on these issues. Even with these and some edge marks, this example retains allure as one of the earliest strikings ever produced by Olympia.
From the Mark and Lottie Salton Collection. Ex: J. Hirsch. Ex: Hamburger 41 (1933) Lot # 786.
