CRETE. Knossos. AR Hemidrachm (2.37 gms), Agei-, magistrate, ca. 330-270 B.C. NGC Ch VF★, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 4/5.
Svor-90; SNG Cop-375 var. (no magistrate); BMC-29. Obverse: Laureate head of Apollo left; Reverse: Square-shaped labyrinth; ΑΓΕΙ to left, thunderbolt to right. Very well centered and attractively toned, this moderately worn example presents great charm and eye appeal, and serves as an excellent representation of a type featuring the mythical labyrinth of Knossos--a maze constructed under King Minos meant to contain the minotaur.
From the Mark and Lottie Salton Collection. Ex: Salton-Schlessinger FPL 33 (Winter 1961/2) Lot # 35.
