1866-S Liberty Head Eagle. No Motto. AU-55 (PCGS).
Offered is an extraordinary quality example of this challenging San Francisco Mint Liberty Head eagle. Lightly toned in iridescent champagne-pink, both sides exhibit dominant color in warm honey-gold that confirm the coin's originality. Softly frosted luster remains to a great extent, and the striking detail is sharp to full in virtually all areas. A shallow scuff in the left obverse field and some light residue within the hair curls along the back of Liberty's neck are all that seem to preclude CAC approval for this otherwise premium quality example. The final No Motto Liberty Head eagle and the only one bearing this date, the 1866-S has a paltry mintage of 8,500 pieces. With the vast majority of coins lost to commercial use, no more than 40 or 55 examples are believed extant in all grades (per PCGS CoinFacts ). The present example is at the upper reaches of the Condition Census and ideally suited for an advanced collection of Liberty Head eagles or San Francisco Mint gold coinage.
