1949 United States Assay Office at New York Cast Silver Ingot. Round Dated Type IV Hallmark. Ingot No. 6, Lot No. 1. 49.59 Ounces. 999.75 Fine.
49.2 mm x 97 mm x 32.5 mm. The front face is stamped (hallmark) / FINE / 999 3/4, the ingot number on the top edge, the melt number on the bottom edge, and the weight OZS. 49.59 on the right edge. A bit of light toning is evident on the lower half of the front face, otherwise we note even silver-gray color overall. Well produced with only a few minor casting imperfections, this impressive piece is also well preserved with no troublesome blemishes. The 45-ounce class is the most prevalent in Ken Conaway's registry of New York Assay Office ingots ( silveringots.com ), and the present example is included in that listing. Examples are known dated 1908 through 1957, and all are rare in an absolute sense and eagerly sought by specialists in this discipline.
