1878 Three-Dollar Gold Piece. MS-64 (PCGS).
This wholly original example displays pale golden highlights to a base of warm rose-orange patina. Satiny in texture with a bold strike and overall smooth surfaces, this coin is seemingly earmarked for inclusion in a high grade type set. Although the 1878 is the most readily obtainable three-dollar gold piece, the series as a whole is scarce in an absolute sense with Choice survivors such as this rare from a market availability standpoint.
