1885 Gold Dollar. MS-65 (PCGS).
Despite having a relatively generous mintage by 1880s gold dollar standards -- remember, though, that the total number of business strikes produced is still only 11,156 pieces -- the 1885 is scarcer than such other low mintage deliveries as the 1883 and 1884. Obviously, fewer examples of the 1885 were saved at the time of delivery, with a higher percentage of the mintage undoubtedly destroyed in the Mint. This is a lovely, premium quality Gem, both sides silky smooth in sheen with bountiful mint frost. Boldly struck, possessed of beautiful rose-gold color and temptingly close to an even higher grade.
