1857 Liberty Head Eagle. AU-58 (PCGS).
Original khaki-orange color is accented with deep olive undertones. Ample luster remains, the detail bold over all but a few peripheral design elements. Ten-dollar gold eagle production at the Philadelphia Mint dipped to 16,606 circulation strikes in 1857, the lowest total from this facility recorded since 1844. This issue has a higher rate of survival than many Liberty Head eagles from the 1840s, however, and the persistent collector should be able to ferret out a suitable VF or EF. Anything finer is scarce, if not rare, which fact confirms the significance of this lovely Choice AU offering for the advanced gold enthusiast.
