Circa 1791 Small Eagle Cent. Musante GW-17 var., Baker-16 var., Breen-1217 var. Copper, tinned. Lettered edge, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. EF Details--Plated (PCGS). About Uncirculated.
A rare variant that is not published in the major references. Softly lustrous bluish-gray where the applied surface is intact, though it has worn through on the highest points of design which, in turn, has created a bit of a cameo contrast. Though we suspect this was not done at the time of striking, it was clearly done long ago while years of circulation or handling still remained in its future. We have seen at least one other example seemingly so treated. An interesting and rare variant.
