Here is an exceptional About Uncirculated representative of this often overlooked issue from the early New Orleans Mint. Boldly colored and original, both sides are awash in rich olive and honey-gold. Much of the original mint finish remains, in keeping with the assigned grade, and we note a softly frosted texture overall. Boldly defined overall, the discerning collector would be difficult to improve upon this 1842-O eagle. This issue is only the second in the New Orleans Mint ten-dollar gold eagle series. While it is more readily obtainable than the 1841-O in an absolute sense, the 1842-O is scarce and underrated in AU and Mint State. In fact, the 1842-O is the ninth rarest of the 21 New Orleans Mint eagles of the No Motto type in high grades (per Doug Winter, Gold Coins of the New Orleans Mint: 1839-1909, 2020 edition). The offered coin is far finer than the typically encountered VF or EF survivor, and is surpassed by very few Uncirculated coins that have been certified by PCGS and NGC. It would serve as a highlight in any advanced collection.
