PTOLEMAIC EGYPT. Ptolemy II Philadelphos, 285-246 B.C. AE 26mm, Uncertain Mint in Sicily, ca. 264-263 B.C. NGC VF. Flan Flaw.
Svor-610; SNG Cop-115. Struck under Hieron II of Syracuse. Obverse: Laureate head of Zeus right; Reverse: Eagle standing left on thunderbolt; oval shield to left. A well-struck and beautiful bronze piece with elegant deep green patina. A small flan flaw is noted on the obverse. An attractive example of this interesting issue, exhibiting fine Sicilian style despite the Ptolemaic type. During his struggles against Carthaginian incursions on Sicily, Hieron II requested military assistance from his fellow Greek, the powerful Ptolemy II. As part of his response, Ptolemy provided Hieron with large amounts of bronze to help the latter pay his troops. Although the Syracusans faithfully minted this metal into coins in the name and type of Ptolemy II, the engravers produced the dies in the distinctive Sicilian style that is so esteemed by numismatists today. This short-lived issue stands apart within the broader Ptolemaic series.
