ITALY. Calabria. Tarentum. AR Didrachm (Nomos) (8.00 gms), ca. 302-280 B.C. NGC AU, Strike: 3/5 Surface: 4/5.
HGC-1, 814; HN Italy-963. Obverse: Nike leaning left, holding reigns and struggling to restrain horse rearing left, the rider wearing crested Phrygian helmet and holding spear and small round hoplite shield; Reverse: ΤΑΡΑΣ, Taras, nude, kneeling atop dolphin swimming left, outstretching right hand, shield embossed with [E] and javelin in left; ΣOP in left field, waves below. This eye-catching Didrachm displays iridescent luster that surrounds the crisp details. A wonderful example of this dynamic and artistic type.
