Description

1881 United States Assay Commission Medal. By George T. Morgan and William Barber. JK AC-24b. Rarity-5. Copper. MS-64 BN (NGC).
33 mm. A lovely mahogany-bronze example kept from full Gem status by a lone obverse carbon spot that is well concealed within the inner border below the letters MI in MINT. Fully struck with otherwise smooth, expertly preserved surfaces. As related above in our description for the JK AC-24a specimen, JK AC-24b features the same design but with the addition of engraver William Barber's initial B on the reverse, at left within the exergual area.
From our March 2021 Auction, lot 7625.

Estimate: $500
