Description

1870 Pattern Liberty Head Quarter Eagle. Judd-1026, Pollock-1161. Rarity-7+. Copper. Reeded Edge. Proof-66+ RB (PCGS).
The obverse and reverse designs are the same that the Mint used to coin regular issue 1870 Liberty Head quarter eagles. This delightful premium Gem exhibits deep rose-brown color on both sides, the reverse with an overlay of mottled sandy-copper patina. The surfaces reveal considerable pinkish-orange mint color as the coin dips into a light. Crisply impressed with full striking detail and a soft, satin to modestly semi-reflective finish. As described by the uspatterns.com website, "Although these are described as regular die trial pieces in the standard references, it is more likely that the off-metal 'trials' of this year were deliberately struck for sale to collectors." Fewer than a half dozen copper impressions from these dies are accounted for in numismatic circles, underscoring the fleeting nature of this Condition Census offering for advanced specialists.
PCGS# 71274.
PCGS Population: just 2 in all grades, Proof-63 RB and the present example in Proof-66+ RB. There is only a single grading event listed at NGC, for a Proof-66 * RB.
Ex Simpson Collection; Heritage's ANA Signature Auction of August 2021, lot 3143.
