Description

Unfunded 2016 Lealana "King Kam" 1 Bitcoin. Buyer-Funded. Firstbits 18YJD5rX. Serial No. 28. Satin-Finish. Gold-Plated .999 Fine Silver. MS-68 (PCGS).
Unfunded and non-loaded. An incredible rarity among physical crypto with a maximum mintage of 30 struck. However, it is likely that the actual distribution figure was somewhat less. The regular "King Kam" two-ounce issue was announced on the BitcoinTalk.org forum on September 13, 2016 at a price of 0.26 BTC plus an additional 1 BTC to fund the coin. These rare gold-plated version were announced later. Though officially titled "Sailing Into Uncharted Waters", this rare Lealana issue has earned the nickname of the "King Kam" for it's majestic and detailed depiction of the King Kamehameha I who ruled as King of the Hawaiian islands form 1795 to 1819. This theme was selected because Lealana is based in Hawaii and King Kamehameha remains a significant figure among Hawaiians today. In referencing the original title, Noah Luis, the creator of the Lealana series explained that "King Kamehameha united all of the Hawaiian islands by sailing into uncharted waters by conquering each island…Bitcoin could be said to be sailing into uncharted waters as a revolutionary technology that is, over time, leading the way and taking over the world of commerce/finance. It is in this metaphor that both Kamehameha and Bitcoin are paralleled in history and is represented in this physical coin." This piece is being presented in this sale as part of a four-coin set of King Kam two ounce coins, each showcasing a different finish. These four coins are being presented individually but in consecutive lots. Included are examples of the Gold Plated Satin finish (the present coin), a Gold Plated Reverse Prooflike finish, a Select Gold Plated Satin finish, and a Select Gold Plated Reverse Prooflike finish. Each finish boasts a maximum mintage of 30 coins, though it is likely that fewer distinct pieces made it into the hands of collectors. PCGS has graded just four examples across all varieties, and each of those four are featured in the present sale. These four coins are also noteworthy for featuring a numbered Certificate of Authenticity signed by Noah Luis, the creator of the Lealana series. These signed COAs were supplied only with pre-funded coins, and those offered in this sale are reportedly the only such COAs issued for Buyer-Funded coins. With such a combination of rarity and artistry, it is difficult to overstate the desirability of these special gold-plated "King Kam" two-ounce coins.
