Description

1915-S Panama-Pacific Exposition Quarter Eagle. MS-67+ (PCGS). CAC.
An incredible survivor from this coveted issue, displaying vivid golden-apricot coloration and uniform satiny luster. Sharply struck and without any notable imperfections. This piece is one of the very finest examples known, ranking at the top of the PCGS Population, and also among the very finest seen by CAC. The Congressional Act of January 16, 1915, allowed for a mintage of 10,000 coins for the Panama-Pacific Exposition quarter eagle. All of these were struck at the San Francisco Mint, along with an additional 17 coins for assay purposes. Sales to the public both at the Exposition and through other venues proved somewhat disappointing, however, and in due course 3,251 examples were returned to the Mint and melted, leaving a net distribution of just 6,749 pieces. Most examples remain in Mint State, but very few are left in Superb Gem. The present example is virtually unimprovable and worthy of the strongest bids.
PCGS# 7450. NGC ID: BYLP.
PCGS Population: 8; 0 finer. CAC Population: 41; 0. The former total includes coins certified both MS-67 and MS-67+.
