Description

1860-C Liberty Head Quarter Eagle. Winter-1, the only known dies. AU-55 (NGC). CAC.
Uncommonly original deep orange-honey surfaces are further enhanced by blushes of iridescent reddish-apricot as the coin dips into a light. Ample luster persists, the strike typically soft for the issue, yet with little in the way of actual wear to confirm the impressive and rare Choice AU grade from NGC. The Charlotte Mint quarter eagle series passed into history in 1860 with a mintage of 7,469 coins. All known examples were struck from a single die pairing, which shares its reverse with the 1856-C and 1858-C issues. Survivors are scarce, and with most grading VF or EF this uncommonly well preserved example will certainly catch the eye of astute Southern gold collectors.
PCGS# 7792. NGC ID: 25JT.
CAC Population: 5 in all AU grades; 1 in Mint State.

Estimate: $3500
