1861 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle. Type II Reverse. MS-63 (PCGS). CAC.
Satiny and fully struck, both sides of this smooth-looking Choice example are further adorned with lovely rose-gold color. The circulation strike mintage of 1,283,788 pieces for the 1861 quarter eagle represents a sudden spike in gold production as the Northern economy prepared for war, yearly totals plummeting in the following year in the aftermath of widespread hoarding in the East and Midwest. The Type II Reverse is the more readily obtainable hub type of this issue although in premium MS-63, as here, examples are scarce.
