Description

1905 Lewis and Clark Exposition Gold Dollar. MS-66 (PCGS).
This is a lovely jewel of a coin boasting a medley of yellow-gold and lighter rose hues to fully original color. The luster is uniform throughout, with each side exhibiting modest semi-reflective tendencies to an otherwise soft, satiny texture. Incredibly smooth and free from noteworthy imperfections. Although Lewis and Clark commemorative gold dollars were struck dated 1904, the exposition celebrating the Corps of Discovery's journey did not open in Portland until 1905. Gold dollars dated 1905 were also made, with a mintage of 35,000 pieces, 10,000 more than struck the year before. However, net distribution, after melting, of both dates of Lewis and Clark gold dollars amounted to only about 10,000 examples of each. This is certainly among the finer examples remaining of the latter issue, as PCGS has certified only 12 coins finer.
PCGS# 7448. NGC ID: BYLG.
