The 2003 edition of the Breen-Gillio reference on California small denomination gold coinage includes this note under BG-887: "Lightweight tokens with this obverse, and reverse reading 1/4 F. Gold * (Burnie S 20), were also issued in the hope of avoiding seizure by the Secret Service."
