1851-D Liberty Head Half Eagle. Winter 31-W. AU-53 (PCGS). CAC.
An exciting example of the issue, this is an original AU coin with even honey-olive and pale rose color and appreciable luster on both sides. The strike is quite soft along Liberty's brow and at the bottom of the eagle, yet bold for most other focal features. Although a mintage of 62,710 pieces is generous for the issuing mint, the 1851-D is scarce and underrated in today's market. According to Southern gold expert Doug Winter (2013), this is the fifth rarest of 26 issues in the Dahlonega Mint five-dollar series. Far superior to the typically encountered survivor, the present example is highly recommended for an advanced cabinet.
