1880-CC Liberty Head Half Eagle. Winter 1-A. AU-55 (PCGS).
Not all that far removed from Mint State, this premium quality example is near-fully lustrous with a lovely frosty texture. Razor sharp striking detail and original honey-apricot color provide further appeal. The mintage for this issue is 51,107 pieces, generous for a pre-1890 Carson City Mint half eagle, and the 1880-CC is one of the more readily obtainable issues in this mintmarked gold series. On the other hand, the typical survivor is well worn, usually in VF or EF grades, and even in properly graded AU-50 the 1880-CC can be difficult to locate. This upper end Choice AU is one of the nicest examples available to today's CC-Mint enthusiasts. It is a lovely coin destined for inclusion in an advanced collection.
