1854-S Liberty Head Eagle. AU-58 (PCGS).
An impressive near-Mint example with overall deep honey-gold color and subtle pale rose tinting. It is sharply defined across all elements with full, softly frosted to semi-reflective luster. 1854 represents the first year of eagle production at the San Francisco Mint, where a sizable quantity of 123,826 coins was struck. It would not be until 1879 that a U.S. Mint would once again strike a larger quantity of eagles, and, as a result, the 1854-S issue remains relatively available overall in today's market. However, Uncirculated example are incredibly rare, as the vast majority of this mintage was subject to extensive circulation through the American West. A more realistic goal for many collectors, therefore would be to focus on the Choice AU grade level. Such pieces are scarce in their own right, however, and few can match the originality and quality of the offered coin from the Fairmont Collection.
