Description

1786 New Jersey Copper. Maris 17-K, W-4865. Rarity-3. Straight Plow Beam, Chess Knight--Overstruck on a Connecticut Copper. VF-35 (PCGS).
131.5 grains. An unusual and enigmatic overstrike, almost certainly struck atop a Connecticut copper. The predominant evidence of the under type is actually the host coin's denticles, easily seen at the right side of the obverse and lower right of the reverse, where the misalignment of the New Jersey dies left the host borders untouched. The letter N is also visible in the plow. The New Jersey surfaces are glossy light brown with splashes of mahogany around the plow and other obverse devices. Some old surface verdigris remains, to no detriment. The strike is good, and the eye appeal is very nice. Both obverse and reverse are in their early states. A fascinating example, one that might reward careful study.
PCGS# 767907.
From the E Pluribus Unum Collection.
