Fr. 1133-G. 1918 $1000 Federal Reserve Note. Chicago. PMG Choice Extremely Fine 45.
This note has been off the market since our March 12, 1991 Stacks Auction. This attractive mid-grade note last sold for a paltry sum of $5,060 in 1991, and given the demand of large size high denomination notes the figure realized tonight should easily eclipse the previous sale price. The $1,000 denomination is highly scarce without regard to type and these 1918 Federal Reserve Notes are virtually the only way to obtain them for a price under six figures regardless of grade. The present piece offers still detailed inks throughout the face and back designs. The note shows one of the more appealing depictions of our national bird at the center of the back with spread wings and talons clutching our nation's flag. The paper is bright which contrasts nicely against the black primary design and blue overprints. Comment free, and traces of original embossing are noticed through the third party holder.
