FRANCE. Battle of the Marne Memorial bronze Medal, "1914" (ca. 1918). Paris Mint. CHOICE UNCIRCULATED.
By J. P. Legastelois. Diameter: Weight: 158.24g. 68mm. Obverse: Conjoined, uniformed busts of Generals Joseph Joffre, Michel-Joseph Maunoury, and Joseph Gallieni, all facing right; sprigs of laurel branches at left and right, "SEPTEMBRE/1914" in exergue below; Reverse: Marianne-Victory, soaring above with sword in right hand, exhorts the mass of British and French troops below; anepigraphic; Edge: cornucopia and BRONZE. Commemorating a key week-long early battle in the first world war, fought by some two million troops with an estimated half-million casualties, resulting in an Allied victory. An attractive and sobering medal of a war that would continue to exact a toll on the continent for years to come. Choice.
