GERMANY. Empire. Sinking of the Lusitania Cast Iron Medal, 1915. UNCIRCULATED.
Eimer-1941Ab; cf. Kienast-156 (for prototype). The British copy. After K. Goetz. Diameter: 55mm. Weight: 77.95g. Obverse: The Lusitania sinking in heavy seas; legend above KEINE BANNWARE, and in five lines in exergue DER GROSSDAMPFER / LVSITANIA / DURCH EIN DEUTSCHES / TAVCHBOOT GESENKT / 5 MAY 1915; Reverse: GESCHAFT UBER ALLES (business above all), Death (as a skeleton) standing left within ticket booth marked CUNA[RD]/LINIE and CUNARD (the Cunard Line, owners of the ship) above and to right, and FAHRKARTEN/AUSGABE (ticket office) below; to left, queue of passengers, one of whom reads a newspaper with the headline U/BOO[T]/GEFAH[R] (U-Boat danger). A British copy (courtesy of Selfridge's) of the ever-popular original German issue by Goetz, this example with the English spelling of "MAY". Areas of rust are noted on the reverse.
