MEXICO. Cob 8 Reales, ND (1572-89)-Mo O. Mexico City Mint. Philip II. PCGS Genuine--Tooled, VF Details.
KM-43; Cal-662. Weight: 26.49 gms. Variety with closed "8". A well-produced cob 8 Reales, the earliest issuance of this crown-sized issue from Mexico save for the uncollectible "early series" issue of Carlos & Johanna. Struck on a broad flan, it displays much of the peripheral legends including the nearly complete monarch's name and ordinal. The mintmark, assayer, and denomination are all quite bold, and the cross with castles and lions is nicely centered. Though the noted tooling is evident, this is mostly confined to a flat area on the reverse and is largely concealed by the mottled dusty gray tone seen throughout.
