GREAT BRITAIN. Great Britain - Mexico. Contemporary Counterfeit Dollar, ND (ca. 1804). George III. ALMOST UNCIRCULATED. Countermark: AU Details.
cf. S-3766; cf. KM-656. Associated with authorization of 2 January 1804. Countermark: Crude imitation of a Bank of England Type II; Raised bust of George III within octagonal indent. An interesting counterfeit counterstamp, seemingly contemporary, which we have observed applied to both genuine and counterfeit host coins in the past. In the present instance, the stamp has been applied to a genuine 1801-Mo FM Mexico bust 8 Reales of Charles IIII (IV) (KM-109). The host coin is attractively toned and fairly unworn. Light graffiti is present in the fields on the either side of the portrait, while a test cut appears on the rim above the D in DEI, presumably an effort by a suspicious owner to authenticate the piece.
