1803 Draped Bust Half Dollar. O-103, T-3. Rarity-2. Large 3, Large Reverse Stars. AU-53 (NGC).
Lovely, wholesome, and original, this is a very pleasing 1803 half dollar. While the mintage jumped to 188,234 from just under 30,000 in 1802, the need for this denomination in commerce was very strong and most circulated. Most seen today are lower grade and many have issues that would preclude numeric grading from the major grading services. This AU-53 has just a touch of wear from a brief stay in commerce during the Jefferson administration. Well struck, the devices remain crisp and bold overall. Carefully preserved since being removed from commercial channels, the surfaces have acquired a rich mix of antique pewter-gray and russet-gold tones. The eye appeal is very charming and this is a delightful example for the early half dollar specialist.
