1849-D Liberty Head Half Eagle. Winter 24-R. EF-45 (PCGS). CAC.
A warm and appealing example dressed in even honey-olive. With a bold to sharp strike, traces of frosty luster and a pleasingly smooth appearance, there is much to recommend this handsome piece. From a mintage of 39,036 pieces, perhaps a few hundred exist today. Most, of course, are in lower grades than this Choice Extremely Fine example. Doug Winter (2008) describes this die pairing of the 1849-D half eagle as "very rare."
