RUSSIA. Silver Medallic Ruble Novodel, ND ("1604-06"). "Dmitri Ivanovich" (False Dmitry I). NGC AU Details--Environmental Damage.
Reichel-570. Obverse: Bust of False Dmitry right, holding scepter; Reverse: Russian Imperial Eagle. A medal that occupies a unique position in Russian history, this piece somewhat blurs the boundaries between a coin and coronation medal. The present Novodel example is probably a 18th or 19th Century production from the original Polish dies, which were brought to Moscow from the originals held in Krakow by Peter the Great. Despite the noted damage, the present example delivers good details, and shows a presentable antiquated appearance. This medal celebrates the coronation of a pretender, "False Dmitri I", a person of unknown name and national origin who claimed to have survived an assassination attempt on Dmitri, son of Ivan the Terrible, who died in 1591 under mysterious circumstances. False Dmitri, with support of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth invaded Russia in 1604, and with the death of Boris Godunov, opposition to the invasion collapsed. False Dmitri entered Moscow and was crowned Tsar and ruled for nearly a year after taking the throne. False Dmitri was killed in a coup in 1606, with his ashes allegedly fired from a cannon towards Poland.
