COSTA RICA. Costa Rica - Cuba - Spain. 2 Reales, ND (1845). San Jose Mint. NGC AG-3; Countermark: VG Weak.
KM-36. Issued by decree of 13 November 1845. Countermark: Type III bifacial, Obverse: bust left, legend around; Reverse: Ceiba tree, legend around. Applied to a 1788-M M Spain 2 Reales (head Pistareen) of Charles III (KM-412.1) with previous Cuba lattice countermark issued by decree of 22 March 1841. A VERY SCARCE and desirable combination. This charming well worn example displays light gray tone with richer coloration in the protected areas. The first countermark is deeply applied and bold with clear details. The later bifacial countermark is uneven applied on a well worn host. A handsome minor issue that shows the utilitarian nature of Spanish coinage.
