PHILIPPINES. Condin, ND (ca. 1728). Philip V. FINE.
Weight: 10.23 gms. 16.28 x 14.59 mm. Obverse: Arms of Manila within shaped indent; Reverse: Blank. This interesting little issue is related to the larger round Condins which bear blank surfaces and are stamped with the arms of Manila on one side. The Barrillas of 1728, seem to be modeled after the larger round Condins, but are vastly different offering legends and a date. It is theorized that the small rectangular Condins were cut down from the round issues contemporaneously to make change in a similar fashion Colonial 8 Reales. The metallurgical readings of the present piece, primarily consisting of Copper (Cu) 88.24%, Lead (Pb) 3.76% and Tin (Sn) 6.99% and contains trace amounts of Gold (Au), Silver (Ag), Iron (Fe), Zinc (Zn) and Nickel (Ni). These readings seem to follow other known examples of both the small rectangular Condin and the larger round Condin. An interesting early Philippines issue that seldom appears on the market that is sure to excite the specialist.
