Laurel, Maryland. $5 1882 Brown Back. Fr. 471. The Citizens NB. Charter #4364. PMG Fine 12.
Hailing from a prohibitively rare Prince George County charter with only 4 notes recorded by the National Bank Note Census. Laurel was once a quiet rural community largely disconnected from the likes of Washington D.C. and Baltimore. Explosive growth following the end of WWII saw a substantial increase in population for the once quiet community which quickly grew into a bedroom community for both Washington D.C., Baltimore, and servicemembers from Fort Meade. The Laurel contemporary to this note is but a figment of the distant past. With only a single bank in town to support a small population, very few notes were issued on this bank which kept a minimal capital of $12,500 for many years, and only $750 in large size notes were left outstanding by 1935. Today examples, from this bank are few and far between with those that remain held in tight hands. This example likely represents the first public offering of a Brown Back from this charter per Track & Price. A rare opportunity for the devoted Maryland specialist seeking to build a first-rate set.
