Description

1860-O Liberty Head Eagle. Winter-2. AU-53 (PCGS).

Ample evidence of a frosty to semi-prooflike mint finish remains, and both sides exhibit bold to sharp striking detail on virtually all design elements. Handsome deep honey-apricot color and superior preservation enhance the eye appeal for this challenging 1860-O eagle. The mintage of 11,100 pieces for this issue was released during the tumultuous months that led up to the Civil War. Each coin represented considerable buying power so not many were saved, and most exhibit moderate to considerable wear. It is Estimate:d that no more than 10 exist that are truly Mint State, the finest of which are certified MS-63. There are also not that many examples extant in originally preserved AU, so this example from the remarkable Fairmont holdings is certain to attract considerable attention from knowledgeable numismatists. This New Orleans Mint issue is roughly on par with the rarity of the 1846-O and 1850-O eagles.

PCGS# 98631. NGC ID: 2645.

From the Fairmont Collection - Mont Blanc Set.

Estimate: $5000
