Description

1858-S Liberty Seated Half Dollar. WB-12. Rarity-3. Misplaced Date, Medium S. MS-63 (PCGS).

A tinge of champagne-gold iridescence adorns surfaces that present as brilliant at most viewing angles. Lustrous and satiny with a razor sharp strike. The 1858-S tells a familiar story for an early date San Francisco Mint half dollar. The mintage was fairly generous - in this case 476,000 pieces - but most examples were worn out and eventually lost in circulation. The offered coin is likely one of the top dozen or so extant for the date and mint, and likely one of the top three for this challenging variety with the prominent misplaced 8 in the base of the rock. In their 1993 reference on the Liberty Seated half dollar series, Wiley and Bugert assign this variety a Rarity-8- rating in Mint State.

PCGS# 6295. NGC ID: 24HX.

PCGS Population: 6; 8 finer (MS-66 finest).

From the Arlington Collection. Earlier from Heritage's Fort Worth ANA Signature Auction of March 2010, lot 986.

Estimate: $4000
