Kirtland, Ohio. Kirtland Safety Society Bank. 1837 $3. PMG Very Good 10.
Plate A. No. 1448. (RUST 14) Underwood, Bald, Spencer & Huffy. N. York & Philad. Center, primitive steam train conveying passengers amidst a rural riverine setting. Identical ends, cameos with 3 dies in between. Signed by officers S(idney) Rigdon as Sec and J(oseph) Smith Jr. (noted for his involvement in founding the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints) as Treas. Black ink obscures both the "CASHr" and "PRESt" title. Stamped in black and flanking "BANK" is stamped "ANTI" and "ING CO." These "Anti-Banking" issues were the result of the bank failing to obtain a state banking charter from the State of Ohio. We last sold an example pedigreed to the Caine Collection that realized $6,000 in our November 2023 Showcase Case. Although displaying heavier circulation compared to the example we sold in November, this example does retain good color and a strong paper body despite margin damage and heavy folding. Overall, a scarce and desirable note that is sure to attract attention when it crosses the auction block.
