1787 Machin's Mills Halfpenny. Vlack 19-87C, W-7940. Rarity-2. GEORGIVS III, Group III. VF-30 (PCGS).
123.7 grains. Pleasing mahogany-brown and olive-copper surfaces are hard, tight and present as quite smooth during in-hand viewing. Closer inspection reveals faint scratches on both sides, but there are no significant planchet issues. Obverse well centered, although from a late state of the die that explains not only the softness at left periphery, but also the break joining the letters VS and crumbling to the EX in REX and the following period. The reverse is off center at 2 o'clock, affecting only the denticulation, which is absent from 1 to 4 o'clock. Visually appealing for the grade, and a suitable type candidate in PCGS-certified Choice VF.
