Description

1825 Capped Bust Half Dollar. O-113. Rarity-1. Die State 113.1. MS-65 (PCGS).

Enveloped in a blend of pearl gray and steel-olive iridescence, this pretty example also exhibits underlying champagne-apricot, cobalt blue and lilac-rose as the surfaces rotate under a light. The strike is typical of this die pairing, soft at most of the obverse stars (which lack centrils), but sharp to full elsewhere. Satin to softly frosted luster shines forth nicely to provide additional eye appeal. This is a plentiful Overton number in an absolute sense, but in PCGS MS-65 the offered example sits at the top of Condition Census (65, 65, 64, 63, 63). It is unlisted in the Autumn 2023 revision to Stephen J. Herrman's AMBPR for Bust half dollars.

PCGS# 6142. NGC ID: 24FL.

Estimate: $7900
