1922-S Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle. MS-64+ (NGC).
Despite a generous mintage of 2,658,000, until a small group appeared out of Central America in the 1980s, the 1922-S was a formidable rarity in Mint State grades. Even today, the best you are likely to encounter is an MS-64 coin; Gem examples are very rare. A vibrant medium-gold specimen with satiny luster throughout. Handsomely preserved with just the most minute traces of contact. We note some minor copper spotting on the obverse, attesting to the originality of this near-Gem. It should be noted that the highest NGC-graded example sold since May 2015 has been in an MS-64 holder.
PCGS# 9174. NGC ID: 26G4.
NGC Census: 12; 16 finer (MS-66 finest).
