FRANCE. Consulate. Uniface Tin Reverse Trial for 40 Francs, Year XII (1803/4). Paris Mint. Napoléon as First Consul. PCGS SPECIMEN-61.
cf. Maz-521 (for overall type); cf. Gad-1070.(d) (for regular strike); cf. T&T-1503 (for overall type). By H. Auguste. Diameter: 37.5mm; Weight: 18.79 gms. An EXCEPTIONALLY RARE offering on an oversized planchet, this reverse concept for Auguste's 40 Francs type features a clear rendition, with steely gray hues and brilliance abounding throughout. About its RARITY, Margolis writes that it is "...believed to be unique; there is no hint in the literature of another example. " Indeed, none of the standard references mention any trial like this on such an oversized planchet.
