Description

1788 Connecticut Copper. Miller 14.1-L.2, W-4570. Rarity-5+. Draped Bust Left. AU-50 (Uncertified by PCGS due to the fragile flan).
84.2 grains. Undoubtedly one of the most dangerously flawed survivors of the Connecticut series. It is truly remarkable that this coin has survived in one piece, and seems to have actually circulated! This was in our sale of the Ted Craige Collection, where we described it: "Undoubtedly the weirdest piece in the Craige Collection of Connecticuts, also the lightest weight by a significant margin. Technically barely worn, with significant remaining luster and extraordinary detail; indeed, by sharpness, this might be finest known. Alas, the planchet it was struck upon is little more than scrap, with a horizontal striation across the center so severe that it is a wonder the coin remains intact. A natural hole is present just right of center relative to the obverse, another smaller one between NE of CONNEC, gap at rim above UC of AUCTORI. The surfaces are attractive mahogany brown with some old inactive buildup in protected areas of the obverse. The centering is good and all legends and date are present. Really a remarkable piece, either the finest known or the worst known, depending upon your perspective. It is far sharper than Ford's or Tanenbaum's, which was the Boyd-Ford duplicate. Mr. Craige noted this piece was "cracked and badly broken flan -- evidence of "clicking," the last term being a mystery to your cataloger. A truly fascinating Connecticut, one which will either be proof of the new owner's dedication to the series or his absolute madness, or perhaps both."
PCGS# 687233.
From the Sydney F. Martin Collection. Earlier acquired by Ted Craige from "F.W." at New Rochelle, NY, February 2. 1964; our sale of the Ted L. Craige Collection, January 2013, lot 11280.
