Description

FRANCE. Rebuilding of Paris City Hall Bronze Medal, 1882. Paris Mint. UNCIRCULATED.
Weight: 181 gms; diameter: 70 mm. By JC Chaplain. Obverse: Female, classically robed figure of Architecture wearing mural crown, seated in a highly decorative couch in foreground, in her left hand a compass and partly rolled ground plan for the newly constructed Hôtel de Ville. The magnificently appointed, newly constructed Paris City Hall, rebuilt after its fiery destruction at the end of the Paris Commune in May 1871, appears in the background toward which she points with her right hand and pointing index finger; Reverse: Oak spray from bottom, encircling central legend and inscription panel; above the arms of the City of Paris topped by a mural crown with banderole below bearing its Latin motto ("Tossed [by the waves], she does not sink") and with "MR PEYRON" inscribed in cartouche, REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE. LA VILLE DE PARIS RÉÉDIFIE SON HOTEL DE VILLE DE 1874 A 1882. TH[ÉODORE] BALLU ET ÉD[UOARD] DEPERTHES ARCHITECTES. FLUCTUAT NEC MERGITUR in center. Edge stamped with cornucopia hallmark. Sold with original display case. One of Chaplain's most accomplished, large-scale architectural medals, celebrating this iconic Paris building and its architects. This medal is of particular importance for the artist, as Chaplain also contributed sculptures to the elaborate façade of the new City Hall, both of French painters: Antoine-Jean Gros and Henri Regnault.
