Description

FRANCE. Ottilia Jacobsen Rectangular Silver Plaquette, 1904. UNCIRCULATED.
Maier-84. Weight: 99 gms; 70x50mm. By JC Chaplain. Obverse: head-and-shoulders portrait of Jacobsen facing left, her hair collected in a tiara, with elaborate frill collar and embroidered neckline. A star appearing before her birthdate, and a cross before the date of her death, with Latin motto, "The best of wives", OTTILIA JACOBSEN. 27 MARS 18. 20 JULLIET 1903. VXORI OPTIMAE around; Reverse: Ottilia Jacobsen's widower, Carl Jacobson, founder of the Ny Carlsberg Brewery in Copenhagen, seated on rough-hewn stone slab in classical dress. Carlsberg's late wife appears in diaphanous, gently billowing classical robes floating upward, her left hand held in his left, her right hand pointing upward, with popular Latin motto expressing the theme of self-control in the midst of mourning: (" He is more of a hero who has conquered himself, than he who has taken the best fortified city "). Sold in original black presentation box with light blue plush leather interior. Another of Chaplain's plaquettes for the Ny Carlsberg brewery (1895; Maier, Französische Medaillenkunst, #77) was selected to illustrate the original brown wrapper of the extensive 1910 exhibition catalog of Chaplain's works convened at the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Museum in Crefeld (one of the handful of recorded copies is in the Parks Collection, below).
