Description

Handsome and Distinctive 1787 Small Head
Miller 1.1-A
1787 Connecticut Copper. Miller 1.1-A, W-2700. Rarity-3. Mailed Bust Right, Small Head, ETLIB / INDE. EF-45 (PCGS).
123.4 grains. Lovely light mahogany and steel brown surfaces are glossy and hard with only trivial microporosity visible under magnification. Struck on a slightly out-of-round flan, the obverse is centered slightly to the left but all of the design elements are free of the border, even if some are close. Dentils are well expressed around about 40% of this side and the details are even and pleasantly strong. The reverse is centered a little high, but only the cap on the pole is touching the border and at least 75% of the dentils are boldly expressed. Though two areas of shallow roughness affect the central motif, these are natural planchet texture that simply didn't strike out due to the relief of the obverse design. Central weakness is common to this variety but where struck up, this is reasonably sharp. One small rim bump is noted but is of little aesthetic consequence on this lovely coin.
PCGS# 686401.
From the Sydney F. Martin Collection. Earlier ex Jeff Kierstead, June 1993.
